Position Summary/Purpose of Position:
A mid-level Accountant position that will assist in ensuring that the University System of Maryland’s payroll accounting is complete and accurate. This will include calculating and processing payroll related transactions, payroll account reconciliations, processing of all taxable fringe benefits, data analysis and reporting. This position ensures that accounting transactions are in accordance with applicable University, State, and Federal policies and procedures and are recorded consistent with acceptable accounting standards.
The Payroll Services Accountant serves as the liaison between the Central Payroll Bureau and UM Systems schools regarding payroll corrections. Additionally, this position serves a significant role interacting between the payroll data and the accounting system. The position also represents Payroll Services in all meetings concerning these data interactions.

Minimum Qualifications:
Education and Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree or four years of equivalent payroll related work experience.
- Three years of experience in professional accounting or auditing work which requires knowledge and application of generally accepted accounting and auditing principles.
Knowledge, Skills, and Experience:
- Excellent analytical, accounting, financial management, interpersonal, customer service, and organizational skills.
- Extensive work with spreadsheets is essential.
- Ability to independently organize and execute multiple complex assignments by deadline while paying close attention to detail.
Preferences:
Preferences:
- 24 supplemental semester hours of accounting and auditing subjects.
- Knowledge of USM policies and procedures regarding payroll, personnel, and accounting.
- Experience with KFS, PHR, Workday, Excel, and Zoom is highly desired.
Additional Information:
Target Hiring range $58,480 – $73,100. The salary range will be commensurate to the experience level of the applicant.
